FG to Leverage Agritech and Innovation for Regional Food Security

The Federal Government says Africa’s route to food self-sufficiency and economic prosperity depends on deliberate investment in agricultural science, technology and cross-border innovation.

Speaking at the opening of the 9th Africa Agriculture Science Week and the 10th General Assembly of the Forum for Agricultural Research in Africa in Abuja, Minister of Agriculture and Food Security Abubakar Kyari said sustainable food security cannot be achieved without evidence-based research and institutional backing. He noted that fertile land and biodiversity alone do not create prosperity — that comes when knowledge becomes innovation, innovation becomes enterprise, and enterprise creates opportunity.

Kyari said agriculture sits within the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda, with science and technology treated as central to national security and economic stability. He outlined ongoing reforms including expanded all-season farming, irrigation infrastructure, mechanisation and improved seed access, aimed at building a climate-resilient, market-oriented agrifood system.
