Edo to Host World Bank-Assisted Environmental Lab; Commits N800m to Erosion Control

The Federal Ministry of Environment, with World Bank support, will establish an environmental laboratory in Benin City to serve Edo, Delta, Bayelsa and Ondo states — one of three such laboratories planned nationwide, with the others sited in Gombe and Enugu.

Edo State’s Commissioner for Environment and Sustainability, Nosa Adams, disclosed the plans at the state’s biweekly ministerial press briefing, noting that the Minister of Environment is expected in Benin City within the month for the project’s groundbreaking.

The laboratory will strengthen environmental monitoring, pollution control and scientific testing across the South-South — a region whose oil-producing communities have long needed credible, locally accessible environmental analysis. Until now, samples from Ondo, Bayelsa or Delta typically had to travel much further for testing.

Alongside the federal project, Edo State is committing N800 million in counterpart funding for erosion control works — an acute priority across the state’s gully-prone terrain.

Together, the investments signal a rising tier of environmental infrastructure spending at state level, with international development finance increasingly anchoring the projects.
