S&P Dow Jones Puts Nigeria on 2027 Frontier Market Watchlist

S&P Dow Jones Indices has placed Nigeria on its 2027 Country Classification Watchlist for a potential upgrade from Standalone Market to Frontier Market status — a formal signal that the country’s capital market reforms are registering with one of the world’s leading index providers.

In its assessment, S&P DJI noted that Nigeria’s regulatory environment has modernised to improve transparency, enforcement and market integrity, adding that consistent policy implementation and operational resilience will determine whether the reclassification is confirmed at the 2027 review.

The nod lands at a buoyant moment: Bloomberg recently ranked the Nigerian stock market as the world’s best performing, ahead of South Korea.

Behind the recognition sits a wide-ranging reform programme led by the Securities and Exchange Commission alongside the Nigerian Exchange Group, the Central Securities Clearing System and other market stakeholders — spanning investor protection, market transparency, post-trade modernisation and alignment with international standards.

If the upgrade is confirmed, Nigerian equities would re-enter the universe of international index-tracking funds — a potentially significant unlock for liquidity and foreign portfolio investment.
